Supporting Babies Who Have Left the NICU

China

Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) offer 24-hour support to babies born preterm or who require medical care due to disease or other condition. After babies leave the NICU, however, their families are often left with anxieties due to the lack of information available about how best to care for NICU “graduates.”

In China, Pigeon has supported “graduation ceremonies” for babies leaving the NICU and their families since 2017. The Children’s Hospital at Fudan University, Shanghai, holds a graduation ceremony each year, and we provide financial and operational support. At the event, we also offer information about parenting children who were born preterm, and share experiences from the families of other NICU graduates.

These events bring families and hospital personnel together to celebrate babies’ safe graduation from the NICU and to express wishes for their healthy development in future. They also serve as a space in which families of babies who were in the NICU can connect with each other.
