Initiatives to Promote the Advancement of Women

Japan, Turkey

Gender balance and female empowerment is now recognized as a key challenge, with national governments around the world pursuing a range of initiatives to this end.

In Japan, according to the recent Whitepaper on Gender Equality, the number of households where both husband and wife are in paid employment increases each year, reaching roughly 70% of all households in 2020. More women are taking paid employment in general, and society has high expectations for initiatives for the advancement of women.

Pigeon believes that creating working environments that meet the needs of women is an important part of making the world a more baby-friendly place.

Initiatives in Japan

In Japan, Pigeon strives to be a company where both men and women can discuss parenting, and was an early adopter of generous maternity and parental leave policies. Employees have access to many options for balancing parenting with work, from life design leave for fertility treatments to policies covering pregnancy, birth, and returning to work afterward.

Additionally, based on its Action Plan for Promoting Advancement of Women, since February 2020 Pigeon has offered support around three key pillars: “Expand support systems for balancing work and family life,” “Raise awareness in the workplace,” and “Provide support for women’s feelings and skills.” In concrete terms, this includes hands-on training to gain an understanding of work-life balance support and diversity at its most essential, regardless of gender; and diversity mindset training for understanding one’s own view of work and life and visualizing one’s future career. In recognition of these efforts, Pigeon received a Forbes Japan Women Award in 2021.

Initiatives in Europe

Lansinoh, a Group company active primarily in Europe and North America, continuously monitors the ratio of female employees and has introduced several initiatives to support women at work. These include flexible leave policies, commuting services for night shifts, and female focused recruiting.

Lansinoh’s Turkish factory provides support in various ways for employees who are pregnant or have recently given birth, including a lactation room and breastfeeding consultancy options, in order to help employees who are parents continue to play an active role at work. These efforts are captured in a special publication that is distributed to pregnant employees. As a result of these initiatives, in November 2021 the factory was named one of Turkey’s “Best Workplaces for Women 2021” in the category of 100-249 employees by Great Place to Work® Turkey.
