Developing Products for Preterm and Low Birthweight Babies Vol.2

Japan

Every year, around 20 million babies enter the world with birthweights of less than 2,500 grams (around 5 lb 8 oz).*

Pigeon not only strives to make nursing easier for all babies, it also engages in a range of initiatives to help mothers provide their babies with breast milk without issues.

“Precious Drop” Colostrum Collection Support Device

Immediately after birth, when breast milk still comes only in small volumes, colostrum is sometimes collected with a manual breast pump and syringe. However, most mothers find this process difficult, because they are not accustomed to using either of these devices. The “Precious Drop” colostrum collection support device is designed to help mothers easily collect every last drop of their precious colostrum.

Product Features

Point 1 Electrically sterilized, disposable

Sterility and hygiene are strictly maintained to ensure that the colostrum collected can be safely provided to babies in the NICU, whose resistance to illness and other issues is weaker.

Point 2 Pleasant feel against the skin

Ensure that Precious Drop caused no pain and even feels pleasant against the skin. It is also designed to be the perfect width for collecting colostrum stuck to the breast.

Point 3 Mouth designed for flexibility of application

Precious Drop’s mouth has a two-way design, one side indented and the other flat, so that mothers, health workers, and others can select the best shape for their situations.

Point 4 Designed to prevent colostrum remaining after use

Precious Drop has an angled interior so that colostrum flows smoothly through the device.

Point 5 Connects directly to nutritional syringes

Precious Drop can be connected to enteral nutrition syringes compliant with ISO80369-3. For babies receiving tube feeding, there is no need to transfer colostrum, more of it can be provided to babies without wastage. (Can be used even when tube feeding is not being performed.)

Disposable Bottles for Storing and Pasteurizing Breast Milk

Pigeon has developed a new disposable bottle for storing and pasteurizing breast milk. This makes it possible for human milk banks to handle and store donor milk more safely and hygienically, in a bottle specifically designed for this purpose.

The bottle’s design was developed and refined based on multiple interviews at human milk banks, with due consideration for hygiene and efficiency. Its design has numerous ingenious elements to its design, such as a slightly rounded interior base to allow every last drop of breast milk to be drawn up via syringe. It is also sterilized and designed to be disposable. Sterilization is performed using the high-pressure steam method also used in medical devices and at clinics, so this bottle can be used hygienically in medical settings.
