This aesthetic is evident in every aspect of our designs, and serves a functional purpose. Pigeon’s nursing bottles, for example, are designed to protect babies from any hazard and to be convenient for parents to use, with curved sides that fit the hand in any nursing position and a rounded body that allows every last drop of milk to flow to the end of the nipple. After repeated tests with life-sized baby dolls, we have arrived at the ideal roundness for safe use in the bathroom, where it is easy to slip and lose balance. These bottles feature a pump with a large rounded droplet design that prevents water from pooling on top and won’t hurt your baby, and is easy to use one-handed.

Our pacifiers used in NICU (neonatal intensive care units) for premature babies feature a unique asymmetrical design that makes them easy to hold for preterm and low-birth-weight babies who are often placed on their side in bed to ensure they get plenty of rest. The pacifiers also feature bright colors that are sure to bring a smile to the faces of visiting family members, as well as making them highly visible and less likely to become lost.

For more than 60 years, Pigeon has continued to challenge the norms when it comes to nursing bottles. Our understanding of the mechanism of lactation allowed us to develop wide-mouthed, slim-shaped artificial nipples that were ahead of the times and have now become mainstream products. To encourage smoother, more natural feeding, we make every effort to reproduce the shape of a mother's breast so that these nipples fit the baby’s mouth perfectly.
Babies’ sucking motion develops as they grow, and we have built on our many years of breastfeeding research to optimize the size, softness, and shape of the nipples and sucking holes to suit babies at different developmental stages and make drinking from bottles as natural as possible.

To make it even easier for babies with immature sucking abilities to feed, our nipple for younger babies is made of soft, flexible silicone, and features a round sucking hole that allows milk to flow easily. Conversely, the nipples for older babies are made of a more elastic silicone because they may be pulled at and chewed with new teeth. In addition, these nipples have a Y-shaped opening that is designed to prevent milk from spilling when the baby plays with the bottle.

It is difficult to make silicone—the main material used in Pigeon’s nipples—both soft and durable. Softer, more flexible silicone makes it easier for babies to drink, but is also less durable, which led us to engage in repeated research and prototyping in cooperation with our suppliers to develop silicone materials with different formulations for each age group. Accumulated research also prompted us to adjust the thickness from the teat to the bottom of the product for better drinkability (babies’ natural sucking motion) and durability.
Right from the prototype stages, we use special machinery to test the durability and strength of our products thoroughly. To prevent damage due to small scratches when the baby pulls or chews on the nipple, we have established our own standards that we enforce in addition to official standards, ensuring a higher level of safety in any scenario we can envisage.

Mass production is the final stage in a process that begins with product design and involves a great deal of verification and prototyping, and the need to maintain a high level of functionality and durability while also ensuring productivity at the factory means that the development and improvement of a single nursing bottle can take many years.
During development, we conduct monitoring research programs that have shown that babies react differently to even the slightest change in the thickness of the nipple or the size of the sucking hole. Although babies cannot speak, their facial expressions, the angle of their mouths, and tongue movements shown on the monitor screen reveal the drinkability of each product.

The nursing bottle may be the first thing a baby puts in its mouth after birth, which is why we must improve the quality of our products without compromising on a single detail. At Pigeon, we constantly challenge ourselves to achieve both drinkability and durability by examining every aspect of our products, including the raw materials used, shape, and the processing technologies used to make them.

the same inspection
for every product.
Pigeon manufactures more than 100 million artificial nipples every year. In order to ensure the safety of each and every nipple we produce, we conduct the same quality inspections at all of our factories, ensuring that our products meet our own strict quality control standards in addition to official standards such as the EU and JIS standards.
Because our products are used by newborn babies who need extra care, we use only silicone produced with raw materials that are checked for safety and hygiene. We also inspect products for contaminants, making sure to eliminate any foreign substances in the silicone when it arrives at the factory and before it is used in production. Additionally, all products are inspected twice; immediately after molding and again before shipment. Spot checks are also conducted every two hours by experienced quality control examiners.

If even one defect is found during quality inspection, all artificial nipples manufactured during that time period are re-inspected to make sure that none are defective.

The quality inspection regime at our factories checks more than 15 aspects of each artificial nipple for defects. Special measuring equipment is used to assess functional aspects such as mold size, sucking hole, ventilation valve, and elasticity, and external visual inspections are conducted using a magnifying glass rather than relying only on a machine. Our staff check for foreign objects, dust, resin overflow, and missing parts, and remove any dust or protruding resin by hand.
While it would be quicker to perform all of our quality inspections mechanically, some checks require human attention to detail. At Pigeon, we prioritize safety above all else, employing human eyes, hands, and machines to perform quality checks.
The area that requires the most care in the inspection process is the ventilation valve. This small V-shaped cut could be called the “lifeline of the artificial nipple.” Improper ventilation while the baby is feeding could result in a loss of pressure inside the bottle, making it impossible for them to drink properly. We inspect the ventilation valve to make sure the opening matches the specified size and that there are no problems with the amount of air coming through, checking carefully to ensure that we do not miss even the slightest defect or deviation from specifications.

Each Pigeon artificial nipple has small laser-engraved letters and numbers on its base that indicate when, where, and at what time it was made. This allows us to quickly trace the manufacturing history of our products when receiving inquiries from customers.
In the unlikely event that a customer returns a product, we use an optical microscope with up to 2000x magnification to determine the cause of the defect. The results are immediately reported to the factory, and we inspect the facilities and production environment thoroughly to ensure that there are no problems with processing equipment.

With production sites in Japan, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Turkey, and India, Pigeon aims to become the number one baby product manufacturer in the world. We have established our own quality standard, the PQS (Pigeon Quality Standard) to ensure that our products are always of the same quality around the globe, regardless of the environmental and cultural differences that exist in each region.
The PQS standard focuses on the safety and usability provided to customers who actually use our products. For example, for nursing bottles we have established quality evaluation standards that include 100 different inspection categories. These cover not only the size and strength of the bottle, but also whether the bottle leaks when shaken by hand, its durability when used with detergents and disinfectants, and whether the seal on the package and the ink on the instructions are safe for babies. All Pigeon products must meet these standards to be released on the market.
We have also established our own management standards for use in manufacturing, and strictly control the air quality, lighting, and temperature in our production facilities, as well as how staff wear their uniforms and wash their hands.

Factory workers have different values depending on their environment and culture, and they often question why we need to maintain such strict standards for safety, hygiene, and usability. To maintain and improve quality over the long term at all our facilities, our staff must understand the context behind our strict requirements rather than simply learning them by rote.
We take time to clarify Pigeon’s manufacturing culture to our factory workers, discussing how defective products can affect babies, and explaining our views on living conditions and child-rearing in each region, sometimes using illustrations and videos to make sure they understand.

We also discuss how customers will actually use the products, the problems that might occur, and the kinds of inspections that are necessary to prevent such issues, and we have found that staff awareness of quality control has improved after a series of these discussions.

Accepting babies exactly as they are and observing them carefully is the first step in the path to product creation at Pigeon. Our Central Research Laboratory is home to a monitoring room where we engage in daily monitoring of more than 250 babies each year with the help and cooperation of mothers and babies who live nearby.
In the monitoring room, we ask mothers to feed their babies as they normally would, while we observe the feeding motions of the infants via video and ultrasound, focusing on the three key factors of the sucking process.* We also compare and study the differences in the sucking movements babies make when using artificial nipples rather than nursing directly from their mothers.*Three key factors of the sucking process

2) Peristaltic tongue movement (the baby's tongue moving in a wave-like motion over the nipple to suck breast milk)

Babies drink with a more complicated motion than an adult, swirling their tongues with a wave-like action as it squeezes out milk. Many mothers are amazed when they see this on the ultrasound screen. Observing the movements inside the baby’s mouth from the ultrasound screen leads to new discoveries not only for our researchers, but also for the mothers who take part.

Quantifying sensation
to improve artificial nipples.
Once monitoring is complete, we use our own unique method of superimposing video on ultrasound images to determine the angle and depth of the baby’s mouth during suction, and measure and analyze the smoothness of tongue movement and pressure. Working from the wealth of data we have accumulated over the years, we conduct further research and present our findings at conferences. In many cases, Pigeon’s investigations lay the groundwork for joint research with maternity hospitals.
In recent years, we have conducted a great deal of research on suction depth, which has shown that there is a stable position for the nipple in the baby’s mouth. We believe that if we can quantify suction, which until now has been limited to an intuitive sensation of pushing the nipple deeper into the baby’s mouth, we will be able to make artificial nipples easier to use, allowing babies to feed better.

Our ongoing research has made it clear that every mother has a different style of nursing, a phenomenon that is mirrored in the unique feeding movements of their babies. We have set ourselves the goal of discovering the underlying common denominator behind this, while recognizing the importance of such individual differences. Ultimately, we hope to put this knowledge to good use in developing and improving our products, which is both the challenge and reward of researching infant feeding habits.
Of course, the real goal in studying the nipple is to emulate that of a baby’s mother. Although the natural form of a nipple remains an ideal that can never be surpassed, we have identified three key factors of the sucking process in our research, which we use in ongoing efforts to create an artificial nipple as close as possible to a mother’s nipple. In that sense, the mothers and babies of the past, present, and future serve as a “textbook” for Pigeon to follow in developing new products.

Pigeon's products have become a part of the daily lives of families everywhere. We believe that we can create better products by listening to our customers and observing firsthand how our products are used in actual childcare situations. With this in mind, we conduct behavioral observations and hold individual and group interviews in countries around the world*.*In light of the current social situation, tests may be conducted online.
We meet several hundred mothers in Japan during the course of a year. Their living environments and family situations vary considerably, and these encounters give us a sense of their individual differences and the trials and errors they undergo when it comes to tasks such as feeding and changing diapers. We look at each and every action a mother takes, listen to their stories, and discover problem areas that that themselves may not be aware of.

to opening the heart.
When visiting our customers at their homes, we try to remain invisible so that they can engage in childcare as usual. We keep our senses sharp and focus on the gestures they make and the changes in their facial expressions and tone of voice, doing our best not to miss anything.
During our observation, we sometimes chance upon behaviors that stand out. How a mother holds the bottle when feeding the baby formula, or how she takes out the wipes when changing a diaper are not normally things that mothers themselves notice. From a manufacturer’s perspective, however, those are important factors that could help us to create safer, more convenient products. We believe that there is always a reason behind a mother’s unconscious actions, so we ask questions in a gentle, persistent manner as we seek to unlock these secrets.
We also find that it helps to try a range of different approaches, such as sharing our own experiences or suggesting different methods for mothers to try, which helps bring back memories and reveals their innermost feelings. The question of “Why?” is sometimes the key to opening mothers’ hearts.

and rethinking the norm.
Pigeon also conducts surveys involving tens of thousands of people per year. However, the answers we receive and the graphs that quantify them are not enough on their own to understand the reasons people think and act the way they do. We believe that the best way to find out what Pigeon should do as a manufacturer is to go and talk to each and every one of our customers rather than just think about them while sitting at a desk.
Child-rearing is a profound experience that cannot be encapsulated in simple numbers and pictures. In the course of their conversations with us, our customers often give unexpected answers, thinking deeply and sometimes even shedding tears as they reveal their deepest feelings. These moments are where we find inspirations for better products.

Even when conversations aren’t face-to-face, our staff of experienced customer service professionals make sure to talk with calm yet cheerful voices to help our customers feel at ease. We try to put ourselves in the customer’s shoes and speak in a kind, easy-to-understand manner.
If we hear a baby crying during our conversation, we may offer to return the customer’s call when the baby is calmer. If we are unable to resolve an issue in a single call, we keep track of the inquiry and work through it, calling back as many times as necessary until the customer is satisfied and relieved. We take a case-by-case approach to customer service rather than simply following the manual to the letter, which lets us stay attuned to each customer’s circumstances and feelings. At Pigeon, we believe that the key to customer service is listening to our customers and assisting them as we work to improve our products.

Babies with low birthweights tend to have trouble with these, making it difficult for them to feed. Pigeon has developed special nipples, such as the Nipples for Babies with Low Birthweight and Nipples for Babies with Weak Sucking, which have been tested and improved in hospitals to ensure that they can be accommodated easily by small mouths, are made of silicone that is thick and soft enough for easy suckling, and provide a slow, gentle flow rate.

Although they can suckle, babies with congenital anomalies such as a cleft lip and palate often have difficulty sucking on the nipple. Pigeon's Nipples for babies with Cleft Lip and/or Palate feature the slightly thicker silicone on the upper lip side to make it easier for babies born with such anomalies to suck. To prevent air and milk from leaking from the cleft, a small valve is attached to the inside of the nipple to prevent backflow.
Pigeon nipples have also been used by babies who were initially fed breast milk through a feeding tube but have gradually become able to feed orally. As they grow, so does the size of the nipple they use to feed, which is delightful evidence of their progress. Our research is driven by feedback from families who tell us how glad they are to have our products and how thanks to them, their babies can feed without a problem.

“Breast Milk is Medecine”

“Milk is Medicine” is a commonly heard phrase in NICUs (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) around the world. Breast milk is vital for premature and low birth weight babies; it is the only form of nutrition that can be digested without putting a burden on immature internal organs, and it also helps to prevent various diseases. However, some mothers worry about not being able to provide enough breast milk for their infants.
At Pigeon, we focus on the development of breast pumps that promote the flow of breast milk without placing a burden on mothers. We have also embarked on a new challenge in supporting the establishment of Human Milk Banks*. In cooperation with the Japan Human Milk Bank Association, we established Japan’s second Human Milk Bank--the first in the private sector--at Pigeon's head office, which provides donor milk to approximately 600 premature and very low birthweight babies per year.*Human Milk Bank:
A facility that provides donor milk processed from donated breast milk to premature babies and very low birth weight babies who cannot obtain breast milk from their own mothers. In accordance with international operational standards, donated breast milk is inspected, pasteurized, and stored safely.
